Guidelines for Professional Skills Module (M4)

1. Module Coordinators

Prof. Dr. Gabriele Diewaldhttps://www.del.uni-hannover.de/typo3/#_msocom_1
Prof. Dr. Rainer Schulze

Please contact one of the coordinators in a timely manner to plan the professional skills module.

2. Course Types

  • Internship/practicum  and/or
  • Study abroad   and/or
  • 2 seminars at the Language Centre (Fachsprachenzentrum, FSZ der LUH) (4 hours/week) and/or
  • 1 course in academic writing and research (2 hours/week)

These elements may also be combined. However, you must be sure to prove a minimum of 12 weeks or 480 hours.

a) Internship/practicum

If you do an internship, please have the institute where you carry it out complete the form confirming your work. This form must be submitted to the module coordinators upon completion of the internship.

b) Study abroad (Link to International Office)

Please be aware that a stay abroad must be planned at least one semester in advance. The German and English Studies departments have several partnerships with European universities through the Erasmus+ Program and with many universities outside of Europe through other programs. Please arrange and plan a learning agreement with the module coordinators before going abroad.

3. M4 Assessments

Graded assessment tasks (Prüfungsleistungen): none

Ungraded assessment tasks (Studienleistungen):

  • Proof of the achievements (internship certificate, learning agreement for study abroad, transcript of course results, certificate of language courses)

Only when these proofs are submitted to and accepted by the module coordinators can the module be accredited. (Link to module certificate).

Further details can be found in the Module Catalogue.

Sample Completion of the M4 Module

Example 1:

You spend a semester abroad. Generally, a semester abroad satisfies the M4 Module requirement. Please note that some universities require certain language skills. If necessary, a language course can be completed at the Language Center (Fachsprachenzentrum der LUH) prior to departure.

Keep in mind that planning a semester abroad requires time and must be planned at least one semester ahead of time.

Example 2:

You have a full-time internship/practicum for six weeks (6 x 40 hours = 240 hours). You also attend a course on academic writing or research (2 credit points = 60 hours), which could be especially helpful for your Master’s Thesis. Such courses are offered by the German and English Departments, as well as the Department for Key Competences (Zentrum für Schlüsselkompetenzen). Additionally, you attend two language courses at the Language Center, each with a value of 3 credit points, totaling 6 credit points (6 credit points = 180 hours).

Your M4 Module is then composed of:

1 course in academic writing or research (2 credit points)

60 hours

2 language courses (6 credit points)

180 hours

Internship/Practicum (6 weeks)

240 hours

480 hours

Important: Begin applying for internships independently and in a timely manner. Ensure that you receive approval on the respective form prior to starting your internship.

Use the M4 Module to your advantage by searching for internship positions in your desired field of work. If you have any questions, contact the advisor responsible for the Module or the department advisor.
